Progesterone is a steroid hormone produced mainly by the ovaries in women, with smaller amounts produced by the adrenal glands and testes. In women, progesterone plays an important role in regulating the menstrual cycle, confirming whether ovulation has occurred, preparing the womb lining for pregnancy, and supporting early pregnancy. Progesterone levels vary naturally depending on the stage of the menstrual cycle, pregnancy status, menopause status, and use of hormonal medication.
In men, progesterone is normally present at lower levels and acts as a precursor hormone involved in the production of other steroid hormones, including testosterone and cortisol. It may be measured as part of a wider hormone assessment, particularly when investigating adrenal function, steroid hormone balance, or symptoms that may relate to endocrine disturbance.
