This test measures the level of CA 125, a protein that is often elevated in the blood of individuals with ovarian cancer. It may also be elevated in individuals with other types of cancer, such as endometrial, fallopian tube, lung, breast, and gastrointestinal cancers. In addition, CA 125 levels may be elevated in individuals with non-cancerous conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and liver cirrhosis.
CA 125 levels can fluctuate during the menstrual cycle and may be elevated in pregnancy, so these factors need to be considered when interpreting the results.
